A minority calls for Communications Minister Sam George to be fired due to the DStv impasse.
President Mahama has been urged by the Parliamentary Minority to fire Sam George from his position as Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations.
The call comes after DStv and the Minister couldn’t agree on DStv subscription prices.
After an amicable meeting with MultiChoice Ghana, the Minister announced an upgrade in value for various DStv packages, despite having previously called for a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees.
Charles Asuako Owuredu, Deputy Ranking on the Communications and Information Committee, told reporters on Thursday, October 2, 2025, “by adopting an arbitrary decision-making stance, the Minister is also preventing regulators like the NCA from carrying out their duties in accordance with the law, which obviously jeopardizes the expansion of this delicate sector.
“His behavior also indicates a violation of the President’s code of conduct, which calls for openness and consideration for everyone,” he said. According to the caucus, the Minister’s stance is a “display of ineptitude, incompetence, and penchant for deceit.”
Thus, they insist that
1. The Minister apologizes unconditionally to Ghanaians for wasting the time and money of the country on this endeavor.
2. We demand that he pay the fines imposed on DStv.
3. We believe he is not qualified to remain the Minister of this important ministry of digital technology and communication, digital technology and innovation, and as a result, urge the president to fire him or have him step down.
The Minority argues that the Minister’s declaration that MultiChoice’s ongoing marketing campaign was a “generational success” was a complete reversal of his original audacious pledge of a 30% reduction in subscription fees.
They contend that this action betrays the public’s confidence and falls short of his own declared goals.
“The Minister resorted to attacking the Minority Committee and well-meaning citizens instead of answering legitimate questions from Ghanaians, such as why he prioritized MultiChoice’s PR efforts over his price-reduction agenda or how much revenue has been accrued from fines imposed on MultiChoice,” Owiredu continued. On Wednesday, October 1, MultiChoice Ghana, meanwhile, clarified Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, unveiled the new value-enhancement DStv packages.
According to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) posted on MultiChoice’s website, the value-added packages that were advertised were merely promotional offers that would only last for three months.
“We fully support the joint media statement that was issued by the Honourable Minister, Samuel Nartey George, and implementation of same has already begun,” MultiChoice said in a statement.
According to MultiChoice, the joint committee will meet again in three months to assess the effects of the new packages. This will be a recurring exercise.
The bouquet selection of a subscriber is unrestricted. Starting on October 1, 2025, both new and returning customers can take advantage of this offer. The statement was added.
Additionally, MultiChoice expressed regret for any confusion and inconvenience its FAQs may have caused.
